As we have decided to do more Sci Fi and Comic Con events I thought it must be time to have a change of costume and hence time for a Star Wars/Steampunk crossover.
So I’m thinking I must become “Darth Dastardly” Sith Lord.
To begin then let’s construct a lightsaber – iconic weapon of a Jedi or Sith.
On a budget to do this as cheaply as possible, but for it to look splendid and be made with classic materials – Steel, Brass, Copper, Wood etc. rather than a cheap plastic toy version.
With this in mind we went scouring the local charity shops and in Oxfam we came across this which has got to be the best possible start for the hilt. It’s a funky corkscrew but it screamed Lightsaber at me so it had to be picked up for a mere £4.99.
Next, break out the toolkit and dismantle and we end up with the following.
So that’s the end of day 1. We have something that looks pretty much like a lightsaber on a stand, with awesome looking cutouts. Next job we will go scouring more charity shops and market stalls and see what copper or brass fittings we can find to add a bit of Steam…
OK after a fun day of scouring the market for useful and cheap junk as well as the charity shops around Huddersfield and one lovely Antique shop we returned with the following booty.
Next job – break out the thermal lance (or hacksaw in my case) to separate the base from the lightsaber hilt and we end up with something like this.
Now I’m getting giddy – that looks like a lightsaber and a nice start for a display stand.
So lets try fitting some of the booty into the hilt and steampunk the crap out of it.
Here’s the start of the look I’m after with copper tubing showing through the cutaway section of the hilt.
Here we have added a lovely sink drainer that looks like it might work as the emitter matrix, not sure yet, looks a bit like the obi-wan design – might make it more sleek and Sithlike..
And finally a few shots of bits and pieces we picked up that might get cannibalised for the hilt or maybe I’ll just use them on the stand. I particularly liked the little wood and brass spirit level, not sure how I’m going to use it yet but I will find a home for it in the build.
So that’s the end of day 2. I’ll update this when I’ve got some more finalised design ideas and have started fabricating…
Aren’t Lightsabers Brilliant!!!
